Michelle N. Neyer is currently Assistant Professor and Associate Director, Research Ethics, in the Center for Translational Bioethics and Health Care Policy at Geisinger Health System. She was previously an Assistant Professor of Bioethics at Clarkson University and Director of Bioethics Policy in the Clarkson–Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Michelle holds a PhD in religious studies with a focus on practical ethics from the University of Virginia. She earned her JD at Harvard Law School, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review and a founding co-editor of the Harvard Law Review Forum. Following law school, she clerked for Judge Stanley Marcus of the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. She has been a Research Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and a Greenwall Fellow in Bioethics and Health Policy at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College, where she studied religious studies and philosophy.

Michelle’s scholarship centers on health law and policy, especially where it overlaps with contract law, professional responsibility, and administrative law. More broadly, she is interested in how the law does and should allocate decision-making power, especially decisions made under uncertainty. She draws on a variety of consequentialist and non-consequentialist legal and ethical theories, as well as empirical and descriptive theories of human behavior from philosophy, psychology, and religion.
