2-year Fellowship, The Division of Medical Ethics at Weill Cornell Medicine
The fellowship is part of the New York-Houston Medical Ethics Consortium, which brings together Houston Methodist Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine, and the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System. The aim of this consortium is to provide fellows with an outstanding opportunity in clinical and research ethics by drawing upon transcontinental expertise and varied practice settings. Fellows will learn from a distinguished faculty and each other through various joint activities: video conferenced seminar series, case conferences, and journal clubs; visiting observerships at consortium hospitals; and retreats in Houston and New York. The program will provide fellows with the clinical experience, training and education required to become experts in clinical ethics consultation and prepare them for academic careers in medical ethics.
Fellowship Components and Service Expectations
- Structured curriculum on advanced topics in bioethics
- Training in adult and pediatric clinical ethics consultation based on the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities core competencies in clinical ethics consultation
- Mentored scholarship in clinical or research ethics including a capstone project
- Case conferences and journal club
- Active participation on the ethics consultation service, including supervised on-call responsibilities.
- Active participation at ethics committee meetings Participation in the educational activities of the Division, including teaching and mentoring medical students and assisting in the development and presentation of educational programs for faculty and staff.
- Participation in Divisional and Consortium scholarly programs
- Requests for physicians to participate in part-time clinical practice during the fellowship will be considered. If granted, we will facilitate collaboration with the appropriate clinical department.
Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree. MD degree is preferred, however we may consider applicants with a doctoral degree in a relevant area of study, which might include nursing, social sciences, humanities or law.
- Compassion, empathy, open-mindedness, and the ability to integrate the clinical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and institutional dimensions of ethical decision-making
- Exceptional analytical and writing skills
- Excellent verbal skills
- Exceptional ability to work collegially with a diverse professional and lay staff.

- Why you are interested in the fellowship and what type of position you anticipate seeking upon its completion
- Description of experiences that illustrate your aptitude for analyzing difficult situations, mediating conflicts, and working collegiallywith diverse groups.
- Potential areas of interest for independent ethics scholarship

located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Our established program is
home to 5 full-time and 30 part-time and adjunct faculty from a range
of disciplines with nationally recognized expertise in numerous areas
including: neuroethics, research ethics, end-of-life decision-making,
advance directives, clinical ethics consultation, ethics education, the
ethics of molecular and reproductive medicine, and feminist ethics.
Our high-volume ethics consultation service handles approximately 300
cases per year, serving both the NewYork Presbyterian Hospital - Weill
Cornell Medicine and NYP - Lower Manhattan Hospital. This setting,
plus the collaboration with faculty at Houston Methodist Hospital and
Baylor College of Medicine offers a unique opportunity to interact with
