Responsibilities
Northeastern University School of Law (NUSL) is creating a two-year fellowship, beginning as early as April 2017, with the Center for Health Policy and Law (The Center). The Fellow will receive support and supervision from Jennifer Huer, Managing Director of The Center.
The Center for Health Policy and Law provides a rich context for students and researchers interested in public health law, health and human rights, health governance, health care financing, drug law, intellectual property, bioethics, health care delivery law and the regulation of our health care systems. It is guided by faculty with diverse areas of expertise and is affiliated with an array of university-wide institutes, programs and experiential learning opportunities. In addition to offering a broad curriculum in health and public health law, the Center sponsors conferences, lectures, colloquia, a Health Law Moot Court team, the Health Law Student Association and workshops that introduce students to career opportunities in the growing field of health law and policy.
The majority of the Fellow’s work will focus on a collaborative project underway with the George Consortium (a network of academics, experts, and scholars in the field of public health) and overseen by the Center. The Fellow will support the Consortium’s efforts to help monitor, evaluate, and formulate proposed federal changes to laws now in place, as well as state and local responses to a potential ACA repeal and other regulatory changes, particularly in areas relating to the ACA’s public health provisions. Collaboration with other experts in framing and disseminating appropriate policy recommendations will be an important component of the work. A key feature of this initiative is to identify potential legislative and regulatory changes that have yet to break into the mainstream conversation, and identify ways to engage on these less discussed, but equally important topics. As currently envisioned, the main vehicle for disseminating information will be through the use of a website and blog. The Fellow would oversee the development and coordination of this work as it applies to potential policy responses, and will have the opportunity to participate in the response itself, including but not limited to, drafting of policy briefs, white papers, regulatory comments, and/or amicus briefs.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a J.D., with a focus or concentration in health law preferred (or relevant second degree), and should be a recent graduate. Preference will be given to applicants who are NUSL graduates, but the position is open to graduates from any ABA-accredited law school. Additional requirements include excellent written and oral communication skills, strong research skills, experience with drafting grant proposals, and proficiency with social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook), website development and maintenance, and blogging.
