General Description:

The Clinical Ethicist will support and advance the goals and objectives of the BH Corporate Office of Clinical Ethics. These include ethics case consultation, education and policy work at both campus and system level and other duties as assigned.    

Job Duties:

Clinical Ethics

  • Serve as lead professional staff for ethics case consultation services at four hospitals in an 8 hospital system. 50% FTE duty and  50% FT office base located at BH-Dearborn. 

  • Provide expert ethics analysis on case consultations at other system hospitals via web portal.

  • Serve as training faculty for professional development of BH system ethics consultants. 

  • Contribute to strategic development and implementation of high quality ethics consult standards, practices and procedures throughout all BH service sites.

Organizational Ethics

  • Assist in developing the trajectory of clinical ethics services within the Beaumont strategic plan.

  • Participate in regular review, revisions, and developing of new corporate clinical ethics policies. 

  • Prepare ethical analysis on special topics as requested by system offices and programs. 


  • Serve on Corporate Council on Clinical Ethics. 

  • Serve as acting Council Secretary in absence of the permanent Secretary.

  • Support strategic development of high quality, system wide initiative in Advance Care Planning.


  • Participate in clinical ethics teaching to staff, faculty, and trainees.

  • Serve as professional ethics resource for administration, clinical and research leadership, and identified community outreach.


  • Conduct ongoing evaluation and research on quality metrics for ethics consultation services.

  • Share service as ethics advisor to the corporate IRB. Mandatory training is required.


  • Terminal degree (MD, JD, PhD, or equivalent) in a field relevant to clinical ethics consultation. Masters trained applicants (MSN,   MSW, etc.) with extensive clinical ethics consultation experience also will be considered. 

  • Advanced graduate program studies, fellowship in Bioethics/Clinical Ethics, or equivalent.

  • 50 case experiences in hospital based clinical ethics consultation.

  • Demonstrated superior clinical ethics teaching to health professionals and students.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership, innovative strategic thinking, and time management skills.

  • Commitment to integrate BH mission, vision and values into all professional work. 

Functional Skills

  • Facility with MS Office programs including Excel or equivalent spreadsheet functions.

  • Facility with Outlook or equivalent email programs including calendar and other functionality.

  • Skills developing multimedia education and training presentations for web based access.

  • Ability to maneuver MS SharePoint within six months of hire.
