Duties & Responsibilities

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (SPH), a global leader in public health research and education, is looking for a Program Director for its Center for Health and the Global Environment, a school-wide Center leading Harvard Chan's strategy on health, climate science and sustainability. Working as chief advisor to the Center Director, Professor Gina McCarthy, the Program Director will determine Center programmatic strategy, and be responsible for implementing all aspects of short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for the Center. As such, the Program Director will play a critical role in launching and building the Center as a new school-wide resource on health and climate science.
 
The Program Director will build the Center’s programs on research, training and translation and communication by developing programs that make the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on public health more understandable, personal and actionable. S/he will assist in developing and implementing strategic goals for the Center by collaborating closely with the Center Director and other Harvard Chan faculty members on strategic outreach and evaluation analysis. The Program Director will be responsible for overall programmatic management of the Center and will work with senior faculty members, and other project principals and staff, to develop, plan, and execute Center initiatives designed to benefit public health while stabilizing the climate and, in doing so, promoting a healthier, more just and sustainable future.
 
This full-time position reports directly to the Center Faculty Director, Professor Gina McCarthy, and is responsible for growing and managing a team of program staff. The Program Director will liaise between the Director and key external stakeholders including local and national public health leadership.The Program Director is expected to foster a culture of excellence grounded in learning, problem solving, and teamwork.

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Contribute to policy development and to the overall strategic planning for the Center in coordination with the Director and the SPH faculty and advise on all strategic programmatic decisions for the Center

  • Determine program content, concepts and scope, including content development for in-person convenings, with particular attention on programs that assist states, cities, communities, and the business sector here in the identification, evaluation and design of opportunities to deliver public health benefits

  • Track and measure program outcomes and deliverables, ensuring that all project activities and outputs are delivered on time and to a high quality

  • In concert with SPH's Office for External Relations (OER), manage full spectrum of fundraising and donor relations from proposal writing and budgeting to cultivation and stewardship

  • Contribute substantively to the conceptualization and writing of all grant applications

  • Represent the Center to external partners by conducting outreach to key stakeholders and targeted audiences in the variety of forms from one-on-one conversations to formal presentations at larger gatherings and forums, including networking with appropriate external organizations

  • Leverage, build, and maintain a network of partners, faculty, and practitioners that can share information and insight in support of the Center’s mission; partners may be local, domestic and international in scope, and include governmental and NGOs, as well as academic and other organizations

  • Liaise and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with other Harvard affiliated offices, centers and departments

  •  Develop and build out the Multidisciplinary Partnerships Program to broaden the understanding of the near-term health and economic threats posed by climate change as well as the health benefits that arise from policies, practices, products, technologies and urban designs that reduce carbon pollution and advance cleaner, healthier, more sustainable cities and communities; such efforts will engage a wide range of experts across disciplines, professions, and sectors to support and enhance multi-sector research that offers solutions to stem the tide of unsustainable resource use, including experts at SPH, the larger Harvard community, and public, private and non-profit partners.

  • Overall responsibility for building out Center team and supervising new staff hires 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • 7+ years of related professional experience (such as in the environmental field or closely related) required

  • Prior supervisory experience required

Additional Qualifications

  •  Master's Degree and/or PhD in the environmental field, policy, or related preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills; demonstrated writing skills; attention to detail; capacity to conceive, shape, and drive research agenda; fundraising experience; experience managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously; experience working and making decisions independently; experience meeting deadlines in a high-volume and demanding environment; experience handling complex and confidential material with discretion; strong organizational skills preferred.
