The University of California, San Diego invites applications from outstanding candidates for up to four separate searches (totaling up to eight positions) for TENURE TRACK or TENURED FACULTY POSITIONS in environmental justice, health care ethics, business ethics, and the social impact of technology, medicine, and science.

These positions are part of a bold multi-discipline, multi-year initiative in practical ethics that spans the entire University. In this initiative, traditional normative ethical concerns are embedded in cross-disciplinary research in the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, geosciences, engineering, business, and medicine. Each appointment will be made jointly between two divisions or schools in order to facilitate collaborations in new inter-disciplinary fields. These areas include the Divisions of Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, the School of Global Policy and Strategy, the Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Rady School of Management, and the School of Medicine. Appointments generally will be at the Assistant or Associate Professorial level and in exceptional cases at the very early Professorial level. The University of California, San Diego, is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

There are at present four separate areas within the overall initiative:

1. Social Impact of Science, Medicine, and Technology

2. Health Care Ethics

3. Environmental Justice

4. Business Ethics

Candidates may submit an application to one or more of these areas.

Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant field. Successful applicants will be expected to teach both graduate and undergraduate students in the participating departments and establish a vigorous program of high-quality research that focuses on innovative approaches in one of the targeted areas. Successful practical ethics applicants will complement exceptional expertise in multiple areas at UC San Diego, including, but not limited to: environmental sciences and environmental studies, bioethics, U.S. and global policy, public policy, sociology, philosophy, cultural and literary studies, political science, social psychology, political psychology, history of science, engineering, biomedical sciences, healthcare, and business. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting. The level of appointment and salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on UC pay schedules.

Completed applications received by October 14, 2016 will be assured of consideration and the positions will remain open until filled.
