Dr. Jeffrey Skopek is a University of Cambridge Senior Lecturer (i.e., Associate Professor with tenure) in the Faculty of Law and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences. His scholarship focuses on advances in the biosciences that destabilize categories and concepts that play a foundational role in our law and ethics. He is particularly interested in challenges posed by developments in personalized medicine and big data. During his fellowship at Petrie-Flom, Jeff wrote extensively on anonymity, differentiating it from privacy in articles that reveal its importance both as a tool in the production of wide range of public goods and as a right that can be invoked against new technologies of surveillance and identification. He also designed and taught a course at the law school titled “Rethinking the Legal and Ethical Status of Humans, Animals, and the Environment,” drawing on his previous work in the areas of bioethics, animal rights, and environmental ethics. Prior to his fellowship, Jeff clerked for Chief Judge Sandra L. Lynch of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He has been awarded Fulbright, Gates, and Truman Scholarships and holds a JD (magna cum laude) from Harvard Law School, a PhD and MPhil in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge, and an AB in History (with distinction) from Stanford University.
