International medical travel or “medical tourism” has been promoted as an easy and relatively inexpensive way to access medical care in exotic, remote destinations. What has not been emphasized in the consumer directed promotions are the potential risks and the murky legal issues that emerge when all does not go well in “Paradise”. Prof. Cohen has looked at these issues from several perspectives and has offered insights as to how medical tourism consumers can and should protect themselves, the reasons why the sector has not secured widespread acceptance among insurance companies, and some of the issues that are looming in the future.
