Thomas Jefferson University has offered industry-sponsored fellowships in health economics and outcomes research since 1994. The purpose of the two-year fellowships, currently administered through the Jefferson College of Population Health (JCPH), is to train pharmacists and other health professionals for careers in outcomes research that examine the quality, cost and policies of the healthcare industry. One of the oldest and most established programs of its kind in the country, the JCPH fellowship program has more than 40 alumni to date. Current industry sponsors include Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC, Ethicon, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Teva Pharmaceuticals.

Eligibility

Fellows are selected from a national pool of candidates with scientific and/or clinical training in health care (e.g., biomedical engineering, nursing, medicine, public health, epidemiology, health economics, pharmacy) and a stated interest in Applied Health Economics & Outcomes Research (AHEOR). Preference is given to individuals who have completed graduate work (PharmD, PhD, MS/MA, MPH) in these areas.

General Information

All two-year fellowships begin in July.
Fellows are assigned a JCPH faculty mentor who advises them and supervises their progress throughout the course of the fellowship.
Fellows usually spend the first year on the Jefferson campus in downtown Philadelphia, PA. Fellows combine formal coursework with actual research or project experiences tailored to their specific interests and goals.

Financial support from the industry sponsor allows fellows to complete a JCPH graduate certificate or master’s degree in AHEOR, Health Policy, Population Health or Healthcare Quality & Safety during the duration of the fellowship.
Fellows are assigned to specific JCPH outcomes research projects to acquire management experience and are encouraged to produce publications and make presentations based on these projects at professional meetings.

Fellows typically spend the second year working at the site of the industry sponsor. This provides experience in outcomes research in corporate settings and offers opportunities to see first-hand how policies affect various stakeholders.
Questions concerning the AHEOR Fellowships should be addressed to JCPHFellowship@jefferson.edu
