Call for Papers, Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy at Loyola University Chicago School of Law

The Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and Annals of Health Law invite original research paper submissions for presentation at our Eleventh Annual Health Law Symposium: Privacy, Big Data and the Demands of Providing Quality Patient Care. The Symposium will take place at Loyola University Chicago School of Law on Friday, November 10, 2017 beginning at 9:30am.
The Symposium will explore federal and state privacy law and policy, including its intersection with the expanding use of “big data” and its impact on patient care. The Symposium is intended to touch upon a wide variety of areas responsive to this overall theme. Accordingly, we invite submissions addressing any and all aspects of privacy and/or its impact upon accessible, quality patient care. Possible approaches to this Call For Papers include, but are not limited to:
The privacy challenges faced by underrepresented or stigmatized populations, and implications for patient access to care. Topics may include the relationship between health care providers and law enforcement concerning the release of confidential data, information reporting in public health contexts, privacy intrusions on beneficiaries of Medicaid and other public services, and the relationship between health care privacy laws and discrimination in employment.
Compliance with and enforcement of health care privacy laws. Topics may include federal enforcement priorities, prevention of data breaches, institutional policies for the protection of protected health information, and the interplay of more stringent state privacy laws with federal laws.
The future of health care privacy in a data-driven world. Topics may include research on big data, sales of health data by companies offering direct-to-consumer health services and devices, privacy of biospecimens, geofencing-based advertising; and the use of social media as evidence of patient preferences.
The impact that privacy concerns may have on timely access to treatment for patients who may be reluctant to release confidential information. Topics may include the delay of treatment for mental health concerns, post-traumatic stress disorder, cancer and their effect on patient prognosis and mortality rates.
Submission and Review Timeline
Those interested in participating, please send a 1000-word abstract to health-law@luc.edu by June 16, 2017. Authors will be notified of decisions no later than July 14, 2017. If your abstract is selected, a full paper will be due by January 8, 2018. The Beazley Institute will cover the cost of hotel, travel, ground transportation, three provided meals for authors presenting at the Symposium. E-mail questions to health-law@luc.edu.
Conference Location
The conference will be held in the Philip H. Corboy Law Center, Power Rogers & Smith Ceremonial Courtroom, on the 10th floor of 25 E. Pearson St. at Loyola University Chicago’s Water Tower Campus.

About Annals of Health Law
Twice yearly (Winter and Summer) the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy publishes Annals of Health Law, The Health Policy and Law Review of Loyola University Chicago. Annals contains articles of general interest in health law, which are deemed by the editors to make a contribution to the teaching, practice, and/or public policy surrounding health law. Past volumes have focused on corporate, regulatory, bioethical, and pharmaceutical issues, as well as patient rights and advocacy. Through this publication, health law students are afforded the opportunity to edit a law review article.
Advance Directive is an online publication of Annals of Health Law, which is also published twice yearly (Fall and Spring). Similar to Annals, Advance Directive publishes articles that provide insight into the divergent areas of health law. Advance Directive allows health law students to write short articles regarding current health law topics, which are often at the crux of debate amongst legislators, practitioners, and academics.
