Duties & Responsibilities
The Emmett Environmental Law & Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School is accepting applications for a clinical fellow. The fellow will work with the Clinic Director and staff attorneys on a broad array of environmental and natural resource cases and projects and assist with the supervision of the students working in the clinic. The start date is flexible.
The Emmett Clinic engages in a mix of litigation; administrative advocacy; advising non-profit, state, and municipal clients; and a variety of policy work. Students working in the clinic help to develop novel strategies for addressing environmental problems; investigate new cases; advise clients; work with scientific, economic, and policy experts; build and review administrative records; draft briefs, comments on proposed rules, and policy papers; and work on legislation and congressional testimony.
This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for a lawyer to hone skills in public-interest lawyering. The fellow’s responsibility will include: investigating and developing new clinic projects; conducting legal research; drafting, reviewing, and editing case and project documents; supporting litigation in state and federal court and before administrative agencies; and helping to develop teaching and training materials. The fellow will be part of the intellectual community at Harvard Law School and will have opportunities to attend workshops and conferences. Given the demands of the job, however, the fellow should not expect to have time to engage in independent scholarly research and writing. Work may be required on nights/weekends during the academic year in order to complete clinic projects, meet deadlines, and represent the clinic’s clients.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates must have earned a J.D. no more than 3 years ago, have at least 1 year of relevant experience, and be admitted to a state bar.
Additional Qualifications
Applicants for the fellowship must have a demonstrated background in environmental law, preferably including practice experience in the field, though other relevant litigation and/or administrative law experience, including participation in a clinical program or a judicial clerkship, will be considered. Applicants must possess outstanding academic credentials, as well as excellent research, writing, and communication skills. Strong interpersonal and team-building skills are also required. Applicants should be able to work independently, as well as in teams, and in occasionally demanding, high stress circumstances.

The fellow’s position includes certain Harvard benefits and a salary commensurate with other public interest fellowship programs.
This is an appointment for a 1 year fixed term with possibility of renewal, subject to funding and departmental need. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

Schedule
Monday-Friday, 8:45am – 6:00pm; possible nights/weekends anticipated during the academic year; occasionally during the summer to meet a deadline.
