General Description

The Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen hereby invites applications for the position as Deputy Director of a new Collaborative Research Programme in Biomedical Innovation Law (CeBIL). CeBIL is funded by a research grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF). The envisioned start-date is 1 March, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is time limited to 28 February 2023.  
 
The successful candidate will be part of a new Collaborative Research Programme in Biomedical Innovation Law (CeBIL) supported by a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The overall aim and ambition of CeBIL is to contribute to the translation of groundbreaking biomedical research into safe, effective, affordable and accessible therapies by analyzing the most significant legal challenges to pharmaceutical innovation and public health from a holistic cross-disciplinary perspective.  
 
CeBIL will focus on the legal framework for enhancing and regulating innovation in 5 selected cutting edge areas: Antibiotics, Orphan Drugs, Precision Medicine, New Medical Uses and Biologics Manufacturing. The results of these studies will be further analysed in a 6th Synergy study which will be carried out within a unique multi-level conceptual framework that integrates law, ethical considerations, economics, science, business and policy.  
 
CeBIL is hosted by the Faculty of Law and is carried out with a unique high profile network of national and international partners. We expect these to include leading experts at inter alia the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at KU, Harvard Medical School, University of Cambridge and University of Michigan. We will also collaborate with public bodies, interest organizations and industry.  
 

The position  

The main task of the Deputy Director/associate professor is to assist the managing director of the above mentioned programme and to oversee the implementation of the research plan for the research programme. In addition the associate professor is expected to contribute with his/her own original research to the project and to take some amount of teaching within bio-medical innovation law or other associated fields.The successful candidate is expected to play an active role in the build-up and development of CeBIL. The main responsibilities of the Deputy Director will be to:  

  • Oversee the implementation of the research plan of CeBIL, and assist the director of CeBIL in meeting the goals set out in the plan.  
  • Contribute with research in the academic field, including publishing and disseminating research results both nationally and internationally  
  • Conduct research-based teaching  
  • Participate in knowledge exchange with the surrounding society and participate in public debate  
  • Participate in research leadership and applications for research funding  
  • Further develop CeBIL’s international research network in biomedical innovation law.  

 
The successful candidate should have the qualifications according to the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities for associate professor. The associate professor must hold academic qualifications at Ph.D. level in law or other academic disciplines related to bio-medical regulation and some years of postdoctoral research experience.  
 

Required qualifications  

The Deputy Director will support, assist and complement the Managing Director in the build-up, development, and day-to-day management of CeBIL. We are looking for a candidate with a strong professional profile from the medico or legal field that combines a proven record of accomplishment in research and with competences within innovation management; technology transfer and/or policy work in national and international contexts. In addition, the successful candidate should ideally have:  

  • solid knowledge of the field of biomedicine  
  • management experience , including staff management as well as project and financial management  
  • ability to enter into and create network relations and interdisciplinary research cooperation, nationally and internationally  
  • impact, fairness and credibility in relation to the public  
  • collaborative skills and experience with participation in international research programmes

Salary and terms of employment as Deputy Director/Associate Professor  
The appointment is temporary covered by the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikernes Centralorganisation, AC). In addition to the basic salary you will receive an annual supplement, currently DKK 92.881,94 (as of April 1, 2017). In addition to this, a total contribution to your pension fund equal to 17.1% of your salary and annual supplement is paid.  
 

Application  

Letter of motivation, appendixes and the submitted scientific publications, incl. papers, articles and books, must be written in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian or English.  
 
The application MUST include the following 8 elements:  
 
1. Application / letter of motivation  
 
2. Curriculum vitae  
 
3. Diplomas. Documentation of qualifications (degrees/diplomas, etc.)  
 
4. Publications list. Complete numbered list of publications.  
 
5. Teaching portfolio. This must include documentation for teaching qualifications as well as a brief statement of the applicant's teaching visions within the research area. For more information regarding teaching portfolio, applicants are encouraged to read the University guidelines for teaching portfolios when appointing academic staff at the University of Copenhagen.  
 
6. Research plan. An outline of planned research activities, including publications plans and plans for applications for external funding. The plan also documents the applicant’s skills to contribute to research in one or more of the Faculty's research centres and environments, including how research can benefit the students in one or more of the Faculty's programmes.  
 
7. Publications. A maximum of five (5) scientific publications that the applicant wishes to have included in the assessment, of which no more than two (2) may be monographs.  
Applicants, who have written a PhD thesis or equivalent must always submit the complete thesis and the written assessment of the thesis as a part of submitted publications if the thesis is written in one of the languages mentioned below. A PhD thesis written in another language may be submitted, but the Assessment Committee is not required to assess the thesis.  
 
8. Co-author declaration. If citing work where the applicant has been a co-author, a co-author declaration, which addresses the applicant's share of these works, must be submitted. Material that has not yet published can be submitted. However, please indicate if this is the case.  
 
In addition to the material, which the applicant wishes to include in the assessment, the Assessment Committee may require further material for the assessment of the applicant. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide such supplementary material should this be requested.

Following the application deadline, the Dean selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. Applicants are selected on the basis of an overall assessment of the applicants that best match the recruitment needs of the Faculty as described in this advertisement for the post. This is compared with the applicant's research and teaching profile as set out in the application, CV incl. list of publication, teaching portfolio and any research/development plan. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert Assessment Committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and when the committee has completed its assessment, each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicants themselves.
