Duties & Responsibilities

The Executive Director works in partnership with the Faculty Director on strategic planning and vision for the Center, and oversees the Center’s staff, activities, and collaborations, including sponsored research, fundraising, events and conferences, publications, programs for students, administration, finance, communications, and other programmatic activities.  S/he also engages in independent scholarly activities, including research and writing, lecturing, and occasional teaching, as appropriate.

Essential Functions:

The Executive Director works with the Faculty Director and independently to build the Center and advance its public profile and impact among policymakers, academics, practitioners, and students.  Primary responsibilities include:

  1. Strategic planning with the Faculty Director to maintain the Center as a leading, nationally- and internationally-recognized research program.

  2. Creatively pursuing high-impact sponsored research projects related to health law policy, biotechnology, and/or bioethics, and overseeing and contributing to work product with research staff, often in collaboration with other programs at Harvard and elsewhere.

  3. Developing short- and long-term fundraising strategy for the Center, in collaboration with the Harvard Law School Alumni Center.

  4. Speaking publicly on behalf of the Center and its programs, and engaging and educating the public on issues at the intersection of health law policy, biotechnology, and bioethics.

  5. Planning, executing, and substantively participating in Center conferences and public events, including topic selection, identification and invitation of speakers, and review of proposals.

  6. Co-authoring and co-editing publications (articles, volumes, etc.) stemming from Center events and activities, including sponsored research programs.

  7. Overseeing fellowship programs for graduate students, including candidate selection, mentoring, and topical feedback, as well as programs for visiting scholars, student interns, and student contributors to the Journal of Law and Biosciences; advising students and student groups interested in issues of health law policy.

  8. Building and strengthening new and existing relationships, programs, and initiatives with relevant counterpart programs, faculty, etc. at Harvard, as well as other universities, research centers, and policy groups.  

  9. In collaboration with Center staff (including an Administrative Director and Project Coordinator)

    • Raising the visibility of the Center, in part by managing communications and publicity including development of a leading website and blog serving as key resources for the field, marketing Center activities, and cultivating and growing identified constituencies.

    • Overseeing day-to-day operations and administrative activities, including staff management, space planning, annual and other reporting requirements, liaising with appropriate Harvard offices, and compliance with applicable policies and procedures.

    • Ensuring proper fiscal management, including budget oversight, strategic planning for maintenance and growth, grant/contract proposals and awards, and resource development/fundraising.

  10. Overseeing all Center staff.

Additional Responsibilities:

Where appropriate, the Executive Director will:

  • Pursue scholarship

  • Offer seminars, lectures, and other public engagement

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

A J.D. degree is required; candidates with expertise and additional training in medicine, political science, economics, public health, bioethics, or related disciplines will be preferred.  Candidates should have expertise in health law policy and/or legal aspects of bioethics, as well as experience in program building and management, sponsored research, and academic administration.

Additional Qualifications

The applicant should be sufficiently familiar with the top players and researchers in the field to identify speakers for events and collaborators for various projects.  The applicant should have excellent organizational and leadership skills, and be able to collaborate with others.  The applicant should be able to take initiative, anticipate and resolve problems, implement general directives and principles, and assist with strategic planning.  The applicant should also be able to identify the resources, procedures and systems need to achieve general goals, and to develop, implement and revise them as needed.  Finally, the applicant should be a person of strongly scholarly values who believes in the neutral promotion of new ideas and empirical research on issues of health law and policy.

Additional Information

This is a term position currently scheduled through 6/30/2018, renewal subject to Center needs and funding.
