Call for Papers: Wiet Life Science Law Scholars Workshop

Loyola University Chicago School of Law’s nationally acclaimed Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy is pleased to invite original research submissions for the annual Wiet Life Science Law Scholars Workshop on Friday, September 6, 2019.

Loyola University Chicago School of Law’s nationally acclaimed Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy is pleased to invite original research submissions for the annual Wiet Life Science Law Scholars Workshop on Friday, September 6, 2019.

Loyola is currently soliciting 750-1,000 word abstracts reflecting early to mid-stage ideas for the purpose of workshopping full drafts with expert commentators and other scholars.

Modeled after successful events for law professors and scholars in other areas, we will organize scholars in topical panels of authors plus an expert commentator, where all panelists have read the material of panel members. We will allot each author time for presentation, followed by intensive discussion with expert commentators and scholar attendees.  Full article drafts will be available at least two weeks prior to the event to all scholar participants so that participating scholars can review these to provide effective feedback to all other scholars.

To ensure effective feedback, the workshop aims to select a maximum of eight scholars.

Submission and Review Timeline: The deadline for submission is Friday, May 24.   Submit via email to health-law@luc.edu with subject line Wiet Life Science Law.  Your submission should include not only the 750-1,000 word abstract, but also author contact information, as well as two or three scholars in the U.S. that you believe would provide insightful feedback and comments on your article.  Scholars will be notified of selections by email on or before Friday, June 14.  For those selected to participate, the deadline for the full draft is Friday, August 16.  Scholars must commit to submission of a full draft (minimum 30 pages doubled-spaced) for inclusion on the program.

Cost: This event has been generously funded by Loyola University Chicago law alumnus Mitch Wiet (JD ’65) and his family.  Admission to the workshop, a one-night stay at a local Chicago hotel, conference day meals, and workshop receptions, are free.  In the case that funding is not covered by home institutions, scholars may apply for travel funding as part of their abstract submission by including a statement of travel interest and reasons.  Additional hotel funds may also be available for those traveling significant distances; please also submit an interest statement and reasons for additional night hotel.  Funds are limited and requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Submission to the Annals of Health Law & the Life Sciences: The Annals of Health Law & the Life Sciences is also pleased to review the selected articles for possible publication.  The format of Annals is exclusively online, allowing for more timely publication of articles, a substantially wider audience, and many interactive features.

Questions: Contact Professors Jordan Paradise jparadise@luc.edu or Cynthia Ho cho@luc.edu with questions about event scope, abstract and draft submissions, and publication opportunity.  For logistical questions, please contact Janie Garb at health-law@luc.edu.
