Sofia Palmieri

Post-Doctoral Fellow in Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, and the Law

Sofia Palmieri is the Post-Doctoral Fellow in Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, and the Law at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. She holds a PhD in Health Law from the University of Ghent and graduated with honors in Law from the University of Bologna. Her fellowship is part of a collaboration between the Petrie-Flom Center and the International Collaborative Bioscience Innovation & Law Programme (Inter-CeBIL) at the University of Copenhagen, and is supported by a Novo Nordisk Foundation grant for a Collaborative Research Programme (grant agreement number NNF17SA027784).

Previously, Sofia was an FWO Postdoctoral Fellow within the Metamedica research group at Ghent University. Her research sits at the intersection of law, ethics, artificial intelligence, and health care, focusing on the regulatory frameworks necessary for the safe, patient-centered, and evidence-based use of AI in medicine.

Sofia serves as Managing Editor of the European Journal of Health Law. She is also a core team member of AI4Health, a subgroup of AI4Belgium, and in 2024 she joined the European Institute for Innovation through Health Data (i~HD) as the Healthcare AI Policy and Compliance Officer.

She is the founder and former co-chair of the Young Scholar Interest Group of the European Association of Health Law, and has co-led the Ethics and Law Group within HINT.gent.
