Harvard Medical School’s new Center for Bioethics is pleased to announce a Request for Applications for a non-tenure track faculty position to finalize planning and facilitate the approval process for a proposed Master’s degree program in Bioethics at Harvard Medical School.  Upon approval, the faculty member would assume the role of director of the program.  A draft template for this proposed program is already in process, and the faculty leader will have the opportunity to add creative elements to the template as it continues to be reviewed by HMS and Harvard University. An innovative affiliation with the Petrie-Flom Center at Harvard Law School is also currently under discussion.

We are seeking an individual with a strong portfolio of scholarship in bioethics, a track record of administrative accomplishment in program development and implementation, a passion for teaching and mentoring, and excellent collaborative skills to interface with multiple faculties and programs.  A strong background in academic bioethics is essential, along with a background in clinical medicine and/or medico-legal issues (all applicants should have an M.D., Ph.D. or J.D.), with the best candidates combining at least two of these three areas.  Applicants must meet the requirements for a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School at the rank of Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The position is defined as full time (1.0 FTE) in the Center for Bioethics (a clinician could continue clinical work one day per week), and applicants should be prepared to start as soon as possible in Fall 2014.

The goal is to enroll the first class of students in Fall 2015 in what is planned as a flexible program offering options for time to completion of degree.  Classes will generally be offered in the late afternoon/early evening, allowing people with careers to continue full-time employment while pursuing the degree.  The incumbent will have responsibility for all aspects of the program, from engaging faculty course directors to recruiting students to personally directing certain core courses.  Over time, specialty “tracks” are planned for students who would like to concentrate in a specific area; the first of these tracks, already under discussion, would be a Health Law and Policy track in collaboration with the Petrie-Flom Center at Harvard Law School.

Interested applicants should send a detailed letter of interest and a C.V. to Christine Moreira (Christine_Moreira@hms.harvard.edu) no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, June 27, 2014.  Those selected for interviews will be asked for additional materials, including three letters of recommendation.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Edward M. Hundert, Associate Director of the Center for Bioethics, at edward_hundert@hms.harvard.edu.  We look forward to reviewing your application.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
